Rainbow Health Ontario (RHO) is a province-wide program of Sherbourne Health Centre designed to improve access to services and to promote the health of Ontario’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) communities.
The needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer people are often overlooked in our health and social service systems, and there are gaps and inequities in services and in the health status of LGBTQ people. Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long Term Care funds RHO to act as a catalyst in improving services, increasing knowledge, showcasing innovative practice and encouraging networking and collaboration.
RHO works with LGBTQ communities, service providers, researchers, policy makers and the government.
- Information & Consultation – making LGBTQ health information, news and events available publicly, consulting with providers and community groups on program development, organizational change, clinical standards and protocols, supporting supporting the development of local community-based health promotion strategies, and creating health education and health communication materials that address LGBTQ health issues.
- Education & Training – developing partnerships with universities, colleges and licensing bodies to create appropriate curriculum materials, providing direct training to health care and social service providers, and hosting a provincial conference offering skills development, networking and partnership opportunities.
- Research & Policy – developing partnerships with researchers, funders and policy makers to gather LGBTQ health data and to encourage more LGBTQ health research in Ontario, and promoting the use of existing LGBTQ health research.
