Rainbow Health Ontario (RHO) is a province-wide program of Sherbourne. RHO creates opportunities for the health care system to better serve LGBT2SQ communities. We achieve this through four main approaches: supporting practice and organizational change, influencing public policy, catalyzing research, and providing information and consultation.
about the role
The Education and Training Specialist -LGBT2SQ Health is part of RHO’s practice development team. Reporting to the Programs and Services Director, LGBT2SQ Communities, the Education and Training Specialist will develop education and training modules and provide training activities to support health care and social service providers to offer respectful, clinically and culturally competent care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, 2-Spirit and queer (LGBT2SQ) populations.
The Education and Training Specialist will provide consultative resource, and other forms of support to health care and social service providers and to their respective organizations to foster the development of knowledge, skills, and confidence in serving LGBT2SQ populations. The incumbent will develop modules, update cultural and clinical resources, contribute to the development of online learning activities, facilitate face to face, blended, and lead train-the-trainer sessions. Additionally, the Education and Training Specialist will respond to telephone and email inquiries on health care needs from LGBT2SQ community members, health care and social service providers.
They will remain knowledgeable about current LGBT2SQ research, best practices and clinical and cultural competencies across the life span of LGBT2SQ populations and about developments in adult learning. They will use this knowledge to develop educational content and facilitate and develop learning activities.
In addition, they will be an educational resource to multiple stakeholders – including Sherbourne’s staff – and will manage multiple projects; work both independently and as part of the RHO team and will work collaboratively with external organizations to improve access to competent care for LGBT2SQ populations.
responsibilities & tasks
- Work with RHO team, update and develop various RHO publications as needed.
- Review various LGBT2SQ journal article periodically and update staff.
- Source LGBT2SQ resources such as research articles, brochures and posters.
- Working with the Francophone Education and Training Specialist, for translation/adaptation of specialized resources from English to French, to meet the needs of LGBT2SQ communities, clinicians, service providers, researchers and policy actors.
Curriculum Development and Facilitation
- Develop, coordinate and deliver online and in-person training and education sessions, and consultative advice on LGBT2SQ health needs to a wide range of audiences.
- Work as subject-matter expert with the Instructional Designer to develop online interactive modules.
- Develop CME training on LGBT2SQ modules.
- Ensure all learning initiatives comply with RHO’s clinical and cultural competency framework as well as best practice and current standards of care, legislative regulations to ensure credible evidence-based workshops and other learning activities.
- Develop and maintain materials for in-person learning activities that meet the needs of multiple stakeholders including health and social service practitioners, organizations, policy analysts, community groups, etc., engaging subject matter experts and end users as appropriate.
- Ensure that knowledge and skills development initiatives are promoted and directed to qualified health care practitioners across Ontario on the provision of safe and competent care for LGBT2SQ communities.
- Develop, cultivate and maintain professional relationships across Ontario to ensure appropriate delivery of workshops and other learning activities and resources.
Supporting clinical, cultural and organizational change
- Participate in working groups and quality improvement initiatives led by external agencies that specifically address access to competent care by LGBT2SQ populations.
- Provide professional feedback to organizations by reviewing policies, programs and services, inclusive language, intake and registration forms, and images on websites to create inclusive, safer and positive spaces for LGBT2SQ communities.
- Work with professional colleges, accreditation and licensing bodies to promote the inclusion of relevant content and standards in curricula and protocols.
Community Building and Networking
- Respond to emails and telephone enquiries from LGBT2SQ communities in Ontario.
- Provide day-to-day direction and support to Ontario’s health care and social service communities on LGBT2Q health.
- Working to support the development of local LGBT2SQ networks, events and partnerships in various regions of Ontario with the goal of increasing community engagement and responsiveness to LGBT2SQ health issues.
- Participate in Advisory Committee(s), team-based projects as required to build greater capacity in LGBT2SQ resources in Ontario.
- Participates in evaluation of learning initiatives.
- Collaborates with local representatives, community groups and organizations to offer referral and resource information.
- Maintains records and contributes to reports regarding the completion of planned activities, expenditures.
- Researches and synthesizes information to create high quality written materials in a variety of styles for websites, newsletters, data bases, media, etc.
- Participates in the planning of the RHO Conference and other events from time to time.
- Actively participates in RHO team meetings, Sherbourne meetings and activities and on external committees as required.
- Completes other related duties as requested.
to thrive in this role, you’ll need
- A Bachelors Level in Social or Health Sciences and professional work experience in health care or social service environment with a focus on communication, health promotion, community development, adult education, or an equivalent mix of education and experience (Master’s degree is an asset).
- At least a minimum of 5 years’ experience in LGBT2SQ facilitation and training
knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Strong verbal and written communications skills and critical thinking
- Ability to respond in a timely, professional, and respectful manner to various stakeholders’ requests for training, LGBT2SQ resources, general queries on LGBT2SQ and other needs as identified.
- Demonstrated experience developing, providing, and coordinating educational workshops/events and creating professional slides for interactive learning materials for health and social service providers.
- Experience applying adult learning principles. Ability to help others learn about the health and social issues faced by diverse LGBT2SQ communities, including LGBTQ newcomers and refugees in Ontario by understanding the impacts of racism and colonization.
- Knowledge of anti-oppression, anti-racist principles and understanding of the geographic, ethno-racial and intersectional diversity of Ontario’s LGBT2SQ populations
- Ability to synthesize peer review journal articles and research outcomes to practical application for health and social service providers and LGBT2SQ communities.
- Ability to draw from research-based knowledge and lived experience of groups such as Indigenous, racialized, trans and non-binary people .
- Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, verbal and written communication.
- Ability to motivate, problem-solve and deal with complex issues with sensitivity and respect.
- Ability to take on multiple responsibilities, meet deadlines and manage tasks and projects with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
- Demonstrated software skills (Learning Management Systems, MS Office, Power point, Excel and Zoom)
- Valid driver’s license: either access to a vehicle or ability to rent one as required is an asset
This position requires working in a fast-paced environment meeting the needs of multiple stakeholders. Time management, multi-tasking, initiative, organization, and prioritizing are essential. Work is mainly performed in an office environment, however overnight travel around the province will be required. Rainbow Health Ontario is a community program, therefore work outside of normal working hours will be required.

conditions of employment:
The standard work week is 37.5 hours. Generally, they will work Monday to Friday during the day, however, work is occasionally required outside the normal daily routine. Some traveling may be required. The position requires diplomacy in dealing with many stakeholders and partners, considerable multi-tasking, setting priorities as needed, and comfort in working with clients who may present in crisis and be agitated or threatening at times.
