Parenting and Family Resources, LGBT2SQ Communities

  • The LGBT2SQ Parenting and Family Resources Program at Sherbourne Health provides information, resources, and referrals for queer and trans folks looking to grow their families, LGBT2SQ families, and gender-expansive kids and youth. Our goal is to make access to information, programs, and services more readily available to all members of our diverse communities.

    Queer/Trans Family Planning Course

    The Queer/Trans Family Planning Course is an 8-week online, closed-group course for LGBT2SQ folks interested in learning about options for growing their family in a community-oriented space. Participants will have the opportunity to consider the practical, emotional, social, and legal issues related to queer and trans family-making in the Ontario context. The course will provide an introductory overview of options for fertility and donors, surrogacy, permanency, adoption, fostering, and family through community, and explore topics such as family models, navigating legal and healthcare systems, family advocacy, and the transition to parenthood. The course will be offered three times a year, in the Winter, Spring and Fall. Limited spaces available.

    Queer/Trans Family Planning Workshop Series

    The Queer/Trans Family Planning workshop series is intended for LGBT2SQ folks who are interested in gaining a more in-depth understanding on specific topics related to queer and trans family planning. The workshops are intended to be taken either in tandem with the Queer/Trans Family Planning Course or as stand-alone workshops. The workshop series will be offered three times a year, in the Winter, Spring and Fall. Topics covered may vary.

    June 27, 2022 – ADOPTION: “How to Adopt”

    Judith Craig, RSW and her colleague Judy Archer, will join us to present “How to Adopt” as they review the various types of adoption and the processes.

    Judith is a Senior Centralized Adoption Coordinator at Adoption Council of Ontario. The ACO is a trauma informed organization provides information about adoption. Their services include recruitment and matching for children/youth/older youth and families, and post-adoption support to members.

    July 11, 2022 – FERTILITY: “Queer Conceptions in Canada: LGBTQ+ Family Building and Fertility Planning”

    This workshop will focus on egg donation and surrogacy. Dr. Laine Halpern Zisman ( M.A., M.F.A, PhD) will answer questions that come up for LGBT2SQ folks interested in Fertility.

    Dr. Laine Halpern Zisman is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Victoria’s School of Public Health and Social Policy. She is a queer performance, media, and communications scholar and has published and taught on a range of topics related to queer theatre & media, activism & intergenerational trauma, and critical queer feminist theory. Laine is also a queer doula (@QueerConceptions) who specializes in fertility support, focusing on LGBTQ+ advocacy, education, and support navigating family building journeys.
