It’s official! Sherbourne’s new Strategic Plan launches at our AGM
Our new 2018-22 Strategic Plan officially launched at our Annual General Meeting on June 12th, 2018. This plan, which guides our programs, services and initiatives for the next four years, has been developed over a year of consultations and discussions with clients, community members, volunteers and staff. Client feedback was especially important.
With the theme ‘THE NEXT WAVE’, the plan builds on the strengths Sherbourne has developed over its 15+ years and reaffirms our commitment to our focus populations: homeless and under-housed individuals, newcomers to Canada and the LGBT2SQ community.
One of the most exciting parts of our strategic planning process also involved the restating of our organizational values.
The new plan also coincides with an exciting refresh of Sherbourne’s brand. We now have a bold, new ‘look and feel’ to reflect our dynamic, unique care provided to our service users.
Thank you to all of the staff, clients, volunteers, funders and community members who provided feedback through surveys, interviews and working sessions, and who helped inform the design of our new strategic plan and Sherbourne’s direction for the next four years.

Almost there … a refreshed Mission Statement and client feedback on our Strategic Directions
In February the Strategic Plan Steering Committee tasked itself to restate Sherbourne’s mission statement. Although Sherbourne will always be committed to health equity and serving people whose needs may not have been met by traditional healthcare services, it was felt that a refreshed mission statement will be an opportunity to more clearly state why Sherbourne exists and what we do. The Committee looked at various inputs, such as findings from our client and stakeholder consultations, examples from other organizations, and Sherbourne’s own past mission statements to answer the question What is Sherbourne? The mission statement will be seen in our new Strategic Plan, and throughout our centre, when it is launched at our Annual General Meeting in June.
The draft strategic directions developed by Sherbourne’s management team were the topic of a Client Engagement Forum on February 22nd. The clients who shared with us their thoughts, feelings and ideas about how Sherbourne can meet their needs in the first Forum last August, were invited back to hear from Sherbourne’s management how their input helped us to develop our strategies. We also asked for clients’ advice on how we monitor and report on our progress over the four-year life of the plan.

Fine-tuning our mission and direction
The Strategic Plan Steering Committee has turned its attention to Sherbourne’s mission statement. The Board of Directors feel that the vision statement (“Healthy People. Healthy Communities.”) still captures Sherbourne’s purpose well, but the mission statement could be restated to be more clear and accessible about Sherbourne’s aims and what Sherbourne does. A new, restated mission statement will appear in the new strategic plan.
On January 18 and 19, Sherbourne’s management team worked together to flesh out the proposed strategic directions identified during the November 18 summit into a more full and detailed draft plan with specific activities, as well as ways in which to measure Sherbourne’s progress in achieving the plan outcomes. This plan will be reviewed by the Steering Committee to provide their feedback. In the spring there will be another opportunity for clients and community members to review the draft plan, discuss their questions and give any final feedback. More details to follow!

Mapping our direction at the Strategic Planning Summit
The Sherbourne Strategic Plan Steering Committee has been hard at work taking the input so far (client and stakeholder input, an environmental scan of the community and health system, the staff ‘Values Session’) and mapping out general directions for Sherbourne’s programs, services and operations over the next four years.
On November 18, Sherbourne’s Board of Directors, Board Committee Community Members, and Senior Management Team met for a day-long strategic planning summit. Over the course of the day, Sherbourne’s leaders discussed accomplishments and successes over the life of the current strategic plan. This helped identify core strengths that we will build on in the next plan. They also discussed areas of our current plan where there are still unmet needs and opportunities: What should Sherbourne continue to place focus on for the next few years? Finally, the group started to map out potential strategic directions. These ‘broad strokes’ highlighted building on what Sherbourne currently does very well to increase client access, focusing on health equity to enhance programming for our priority populations, investing in Sherbourne’s infrastructure and capacity to keep developing innovative ways to serve clients, and nurturing the workplace culture to prioritize health, safety and learning.
During the session, participants also saw a preview of Sherbourne’s new branding and visual identity. After fifteen years of service, a refreshed, modern ‘look and feel’ will be launched along with the strategic plan. This will help distinguish Sherbourne from other organizations in the health and charitable sector.

Staff take part in a ‘Values Session’
On September 7, over eighty Sherbourne staff and providers took part in a ‘Values Session.’ While we work to develop our client and stakeholder feedback and our environmental scan into our next strategic plan, we are taking time to reflect on how we do our work: our organization’s values.
In an interactive, lively exercise, our staff and providers plotted out what Sherbourne means to them, the personal values they each bring to work, and what is important to them about Sherbourne’s culture. These were grouped into similar sets of values, which the participants then voted on using the “Dotmocracy” method. The variety of ways in which participants expressed their values reflects the diversity of lived and professional experiences that people bring to Sherbourne. However, five common ‘values’ emerged.
The outcomes from this exercise will help form the organization’s set of values, which will be featured in the Strategic Plan and guide how we do our work.

Client Engagement Forum a huge success!
As you know, we are in the process of creating our next Strategic Plan. Part of this process includes hearing from our stakeholders: community partners, funders, the Board, clients and staff.
On Wednesday, August 9th, Sherbourne Health held its first Client Engagement Forum. Clients of programs across the organization were invited to participate in a discussion about Sherbourne’s current and future states. Sherbourne’s first Client Engagement Forum was well attended, with a high level of enthusiasm and participation. We listened as clients shared their thoughts, feelings and suggestions about Sherbourne, and have taken away valuable information that will help to inform our next Strategic Plan. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Developing Sherbourne’s next Strategic Plan with our community
Throughout 2017 we will be developing our new multi-year Strategic Plan. The plan will guide our ongoing work and the future direction of Sherbourne Health, and we need your help!
Our goal is to launch our new Strategic Plan at our Annual General Meeting in June 2018.
We aim to create inclusive and meaningful opportunities for participation and feedback through our stakeholder engagement plan. We want you to have your say, and we’ll listen. To ensure our Strategic Plan process is accountable and transparent, we’ll be communicating our progress here throughout the year.
The first step is our survey, available online and on-site in early July. The survey will help gather information and opinions that will guide our process. What we hear from you will provide important input as we start to develop our Strategic Plan goals, objectives and key performance indicators. There will be more opportunities for you to review and give input to guide our directions.
